"Self Portrait" by Rei Lo
Inspired by the work of Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, I felt compelled to illustrate this self portrait to address the numerous hate crimes toward the Asian community during COVID-19. This piece is meant to be explicit and exhibit the dehumanizing nature of racism.
Rei Lo is a Chinese American artist from Queens, NY. She received her BFA in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology with a specialization in Sportswear. Her series "Unveiled in Red" amplifies the various individuals affected by hate crimes toward the Asian community during COVID-19. Her work seeks to examine the intersectionality of the Black Lives Matter movement and these attacks experienced within the Asian community.
